From Seed to Your Table

Get ready to get your hands dirty, get some sunshine in the open air, and learn how to grow food, flowers, and herbs. Our homeschool classes combine academics with hands-on gardening at the historic Herff Farm. Each week will include a garden-based lesson with Maura Bobbitt, our Farm Programs Coordinator, and time to garden in your own 4’ x 20’ adopted garden bed, supported by our farm staff.

Organic gardening and sustainable living mean understanding our place within the larger ecosystem. So we’ll cover a wide range of topics such as soil and plant biology, organic gardening methods, garden design and planning, decomposers and composting, and culinary and medicinal uses of the plants we grow. Course tuition includes an opportunity to sell products you have grown at the Farmers Market at Herff Farm.

  • Learn science skills for all levels of students
  • Learn how to select plants for the season
  • Design and maintain your garden at the farm
  • Grow vegetables, flowers, and herbs
  • Investigate the ecosystem and find ways to support the environment as a whole
  • Harvest from your garden bed and learn how to make the most of your plants!

Note that a parent or caregiver will stay for the program since this course is designed for family participation.

Your tuition covers a place in the class for each member of your family, a 4’x20’ irrigated garden bed at Herff Farm, a seasonal selection of transplants and seeds to plant in your beds, and all additional supplies for exciting projects like growing your own oyster mushrooms and starting your own worm compost.
