Adventures in a Backpack!

Check-out or buy a backpack stuffed full of activities, books, scientific instruments and guides to take with you on your self-guided exploration of the Cibolo Nature Center.  Our themed adventure packs provide unique opportunities for engaging with nature.  Collect them all! 

We are curating adventures covering a wide variety of themes to get your family exploring in a meaningful way.  Our first theme is Insect Adventure.  We’ll keep adding new adventures for you to embark on, so keep checking back!  When you complete your activities for each backpack, you’ll receive a special button to show that you’ve mastered that theme!

Step Gently Out by Helen Frost (Candlewick: 2013). Close-up photographs and simple words invite readers to step gently outside and meet the insects around them. Ages 2-6. 

Ant, Ant, Ant, an Insect Chant by April Pulley Sayre (Cooper Square Publishing: 2005). Humorous illustrations accompany this light-hearted but informative chant to insects by a top naturalist-writer for children. Ages 3-7. 

Fireflies by Julie Brinckloe (Aladdin Books: 1986). A boy is so excited about the arrival of fireflies tohis backyard that he can hardly sit still through dinner. Ages 4-7 

June’s Jar by Jane Bahk (Lee Low Books: 2015) Sometimes a simple, everyday object can take you away on great adventures. One day, Hector unexpectedly moves away without having a chance to say good-bye. Juna is heartbroken and left to wonder who will on go on adventures with her. Determined to find Hector, Juna turns to her special kimchi jar for help each night. Can I keep my backpack?

Yes! All Junior Trailblazer Backpacks are available for purchase at the Visitor’s Center.

How long does my rental last?

Backpack rentals must be returned the same day. If you’d like to rent for multiple days, please let our staff know at the Visitor’s Center. They can be checked out at 10am and must be returned by 4:30pm.

What if I lose or break something from my backpack?

We understand that accidents happen! If you lose something from your backpack, just let us know when you turn it back in. Depending on what it is, you might be responsible for replacing missing items, but we’ll work with you on a case-by-case basis.

Where do I rent my backpack?

You can rent your backpack from the Visitor’s Center. We have adjusted our hours slightly to accommodate COVID-19, so please check our Location and Hours for current Visitor Center hours. Our visitor’s center is located at 140 City Park Rd.
