Bee Program at Herff Farm

The Cibolo’s Bee Program supports pollinator conservation and provides meaningful learning opportunities for children through nature-based education programming at Herff Farm. With six honeybee hives cared for in partnership with the Texas Hill Country Beekeepers Association, the program strengthens local pollinator populations while enriching the curriculum of our youth programs.

Why Bees Matter

Honeybees and native pollinators are essential to healthy ecosystems, agriculture, and biodiversity. By maintaining thriving hives and surrounding pollinator-friendly habitats, The Cibolo contributes to a more resilient landscape and helps children understand the vital role pollinators play in our world.

How Bees Enhance Children’s Programming

The Bee Program is woven into our educational programming, offering age-appropriate learning opportunities such as:

  • Guided nature lessons focused on pollinators
  • Safe viewing and observation of bee behavior
  • Hands-on activities in pollinator gardens
  • Interactive lessons about hive structure, bee biology, and the importance of pollination
  • Demonstrations and expertise provided by local beekeepers

These activities spark curiosity, build environmental literacy, and help children develop a deeper connection to nature.

Bee Safety

Safety is a foundational element of our Bee Program. All hive work is conducted by trained staff and beekeepers, with the bee yard securely enclosed and clearly marked. Children engage with bee-related learning through safe, structured activities designed to minimize risk. Staff receive bee-safety training and follow established protocols for all pollinator-related programming.

FAQs

Are the beehives part of programming at The Cibolo?

The hives support our educational mission and are integrated into staff-led children’s programming. All bee-related learning takes place through safe, structured activities led by trained educators and partner beekeepers.

How does The Cibolo ensure safety around bees?

Our bee yard is fully enclosed, clearly marked, and managed exclusively by trained staff and beekeepers. We follow established safety protocols and reinforce calm, respectful behavior around pollinator habitats.

Will educational programming take place close to the bees?

Children engage in bee-themed learning from safe, designated observation areas and are led by trained staff. At no point do children enter the bee yard itself.

What if my child has a bee sting allergy?

Parents/guardians should inform program staff of any known allergies. Staff are trained in bee-safety procedures and general first-aid response. Families should send necessary medications such as EpiPens when applicable.

Do staff receive training?

Yes. All staff participating in bee-related programming receive bee-safety training from experienced beekeepers, including how to prevent stings and how to respond appropriately if one occurs.

Are there things visitors should avoid near pollinator areas?

Yes — calm movements and staying on designated paths help support safe, positive experiences around pollinators.
